MAS-38 Submachine Gun

介绍

Introduction

The MAS-38 was France's first official submachine gun, adopted in 1938 after a prolonged development phase stretching back to the early 1920s. The guns were rushed into production in 1939 in anticipation of German aggression, and less than 1,000 were manufactured before Marshal Pétain's cabinet signed an armistice with Germany to dissolve the Third French Republic and replace it with his own Vichy government. Pétain's Nazi-influenced Vichy government retained partial control over the French "zone libre" in the south until 1942. During this time, the guns were produced in the occupied northern territory at the Manufacture d'armes de Saint-Étienne. Approximately 25,000 MAS-38s were made under German occupation. Production continued after the war, lasting until 1951, at which point over 200,000 guns had been produced.

The MAS-38 was used by both free French forces and Nazi Germany and the Vichy during the war. The guns remained in French service for quite some time after production ceased. Many MAS-38s were among the guns captured when the Viet Minh defeated French forces at Dien Bien Phu in 1954, and subsequently found their way into the Vietnam War.

The MAS 38 has a very unusual design feature in that the barrel is offset by 6 degrees from the receiver. This feature is meant to counteract the inherent problem in guns like the MAS with buffer tubes (like the AR-15) in which the sights must be raised high above the bore in order for the shooter to obtain a comfortable sight picture. In order to get around this, the barrel was angled so that the stock could be dropped slightly, allowing a lower sight plane. The angle at which the bolt interfaces with the chamber also acts as a delaying mechanism, because the cartridge case is at a mechanical disadvantage in trying to push the bolt at an angle. This feature was also used the Finnish Jatimatic submachine gun. The MAS-38 is chambered for the 7.65 Longue cartridge, a derivative of the .30 Pedersen. It is roughly equivalent in power to a .38 Special, so the in-game MAS takes .38 rounds in place of 7.65 Longue.

A unique variant of the MAS-38, "Le Tueur de Fascistes", or "Fascist Killer", is also included. Its name is a reference to the fact that a MAS-38 was the weapon used by Italian Partisans to shoot and kill Benito Mussolini on April 28, 1945. It has its own custom texture and cannot be modded. It has a permanent legendary effect, doing more damage as the player's health declines. See location section for location.

Location

Though few MAS-38s made it to the United States, I have decided to include leveled list integration with this mod. They will start spawning on gunners at level 5 and vendors at level 10.

The unique version, "Le Tueur de Fascistes", can be found in the secret area of Vault 81 next to Curie, surrounded by the finest French Roquefort and Merlot. C'est bon!

And if you feel like cheating, type "help "mas-38" 4" into the console for the base gun or "help "le tueur" 4" for the unique and add it into your inventory using the base id.
