I made this mod for myself to use in Skyrim VR and thought others may find it useful. I think this should work in Skyrim Special Edition too, but I don’t own it and cannot do a test. If you are willing to test it in SSE, let me know what the results are.

Ever look at the open crates that come with the smelter and wish you had more? 

I did.

This mod replaces certain locks, barrels and chests with open crates in the smithing room located in the cellar. No more trying to remember which ore, ingot or gemstone is in which closed container. Now you can easily walk over and look at the smithing material you need and pick it up.

Wall One: 10 (5 + 5) open crates for each type of ore or ingot.
Wall Two: 10 (5 + 5) open crates for each type of ingot or ore.
Wall Three: 12 (6 + 6) open crates for each type of gemstone (regular and flawless).
Floor: 2 crates for leather pieces and leather strips.

The script for the workbench hasn’t changed. This means you will have to build a safe, barrel or chest and use the appropriate materials. Listed below are the workbench options and what they change. Left and right are defined by standing in the doorway and facing the smithing room.

Safe (5) [1st listed] = Right Side, Bottom Shelf
Barrel [4th listed] = Right Side, Middle Shelf
Safe (5) [2nd listed] = Left Side, Middle Shelf
End Table [1st small listed] = Center, Middle + Bottom Shelf

The Left Side, Bottom Shelf will have open crates after you build the smelter.

Note that I did not make a crate for smeltable dwemer artifacts and pelts because you only need one of them to yield dwarven ingots and leather, respectively. There is no practical reason to store them. If you want to store them out in the open for roleplaying reasons, you still can. I didn’t touch the built-in top shelf on the wall where pelts are originally spawned (see photo). Also, the smelter comes with an open crate beside it, which you can use for dwemer artifacts.

Instructions:

Skyrim house decorating is a pain in the tuckus. Objects will inevitably hop out of its placement once you leave the house and return. For now, use this well-known workaround:

Enter the cellar and drop all your smithing materials on the floor. I suggest dropping items individually instead of stacks as this will make crafting less tedious later. Exit the house and then go back inside and enter the cellar again. Lift the smithing materials and place them in crates. They will now stay in place. Do not put them back in your inventory or else you will have to restart this process again.

Also, I find it easier to wield a sword or hold an arrow and use it to point to objects and move them. I don’t know if the visual of a pointing device makes a psychological difference or if there is something about the game mechanic that changes. Regardless, I have placed a wooden sword against the far wall that will appear after constructing the smelter. It replaces the broom seen in the photo above. Try using it if you are having trouble picking up and dropping items with your VR hands. If it doesn’t suit you, the wooden sword can be given as a gift to an adopted child.

Installation:

Use Vortex or Mod Organizer 2. Both have support for Skyrim VR.

Acquire the mod by clicking the Files tab and clicking on the latest version. Don’t forget to install and enable the mod in your mod software.

The mod will work if you’ve already constructed the safes, barrel and end table. However, there will be a shovel and pickaxe that spawns in the far wall shelf after making the end table. You may want to use another mod that prevents Hearthfire objects from re-spawning, as it can potentially interfere with objects you place in the crate. I believe the re-spawn time for objects in Skyrim is 10 days.

Using the mod before you construct the safes, barrel and end table results in no such issues as I have removed the shovel and pickaxe.
