So you know when a follower dies in a hectic battle and YOU KNOW that the only reason they could have died is because YOU killed them somehow? Well, now you won't know if it was REALLY your fault!

To keep your game narrative more interesting and unpredictable, I present to you...



This mod allows for followers to die (killed by other NPCs) and there's also a chance they get injuries resulting from battles.

- Each time a follower goes into bleeding/kneeling mode, there's 3 possible outcomes:

Follower is very lucky and only gets a small temporary injury.

→ This is the best outcome. This type of injury does not stack, it lasts 7 real-time minutes and reduces their maximum Health, Stamina and Magicka by -25. Chance of getting this outcome is 

70% by default

. If you have a very strong follower, the chance will be bigger. Full explanation below.

~

Follower is somewhat lucky and only gets a serious injury.

→ Serious injuries last a random number of days between 2 and 20 (or you can customize the duration in the MCM). They reduce your follower's maximum Health, Stamina and Magicka by -50. Your follower will automatically wear a bandage around their head to notify you of their injury. Chance of getting this outcome is at 

15%

 by default, but it's also affected by other factors. A serious injury WILL heal, as long as your follower doesn't get a SECOND serious injury on top of the first one. If they do, that one will be permanent. You should treat serious injuries as a death-warning; It was a very close call for your follower. You can choose to ignore the injury and keep your companion with you, but know that they're in risk of getting a PERMANENT injury or dying. The risk is of dying or getting a permanent injury is actually increased by 10% while they're injured... and remember they are also weaker and more likely to fall in battle. This is all to say... If you appreciate your follower's life, you should probably send them home to rest. 

~

Follower is unlucky and dies.

→ May their soul go to Sovngarde. Your follower has suffered an injury they could not recover from. Chance of getting this outcome is at 

15% by default.

 The higher the level of your follower, the less likely they will die. Thus, stronger followers are less likely to die.


     ‎

~Default Values, factors and formula~

70% chance they are fine.  (Not final value, injuries and follower level affect this)

15% chance they get a permanent injury. (Not final value, injuries and follower level affect this)

15% chance they die. (Not final value, injuries and follower level affect this)


These values can be configured via the MCM. Note however, that even if you select 0% as the probability of death, there might be a tiny chance they still die. Why? Here's how it works:

- The "Dice": Random Number from 1 to 100 
- Likelihood for death/Injury (Customizable, 15% by default)
- Follower_Level: Level x 0.12 (works in their favour, the higher the level the less likely they are to die or get injured)
- SeriousInjury: Is your follower affected by a serious injury currently? If so, 10% chance increase for death/injury.

Formula: 

If (100 - "Dice" + "Follower_Level" - SeriousInjury) < LikelihoodforDeath = DEATH

This means that even at 0% set chance for death in the MCM, if your follower is affected by a serious injury, they will have somewhere between 0-10% chance of dying, depending on their level. TL;DR: Your followers are at risk of dying while they're injured, even if you set 0% in the MCM.


~COMPATIBILITY~

There's 3 variants of this mod to ensure compatibility with the most popular follower frameworks, use only one of the files.

Vanilla Version: If you don't use a follower framework, you should use this version. Followers from Interesting NPCs, Serana and other complex follower mods (Inigo, Lucien) won't be affected by this version (They will never suffer injuries or die). There's an option in the MCM to import them though.

  

EFF Version: Support for  followers. This could be expanded if needed. If Serana is imported into EFF, she will never die, but can suffer serious and minor injuries. Interesting NPCs will be affected by my mod (and possibly die) if using the EFF patch provided by Interesting NPCs. Other special followers not covered by EFF can be imported to the Injury/death system via my mod's MCM.


Nether's Follower Framework: Support for all 10 NFF follower slots. Serana can suffer injuries, but will never die. Followers from Interesting NPCs will be affected (and can die) if using the option for them when installing NFF. Other special followers not covered by NFF can be imported to the Injury/death system via my mod's MCM.



~FAQ~

You monster, why do you want followers to die!

→ I love story-telling and creating my own narratives when I'm playing Skyrim. Having a follower die on you can be a turning point in the story of your character. In vanilla, leaving a follower behind and running for your life has no consequences, as you know they will be fine. Now, you will have to wonder if you've left your follower to their death, or if they manage to sneak out somehow and come back to you. Having actual stakes when playing with followers is something I really wished to have, but simply marking followers "non-protected" is just unfair to the player, as we know most followers fall to their knees every second fight they're in. I think this is a good balance where you'll actually have to actively protect your followers.



Why can't Serana die?

→ I'm sure it can be changed, but I don't want to mess/break the Dawnguard expansion. If imported into EFF or NFF, she will suffer injuries just like other followers.

 

What about super followers like Inigo or Lucien?

→ They can be imported via my mod's MCM. Just target them with your crosshair and go into the MCM to import them. This does not mess with their follower framework at all, so it's safe to use. However, not all special followers can die, but all of them will be affected by the injury system when imported. Read the sticky comment for details.



Are you going to add support for other follower frameworks?

→ I got the original idea from iAFT, so that one is covered. I don't have plans to add more frameworks into the mix, sorry.



How did you get your followers to look injured in the pictures included in this mod? And the grave?

→ 

The bandage is part of this mod. If you want the injuries, you'll need to use EFF (for access to the follower tattoo system), or use the 

EFF Standalone Cosmetic Menu

. The overlay used in the screenshots belong to 

Skin Feature Overlays

. The bandage gets applied automatically by my mod, the visual injuries is something completely optional and external that you'd have to do yourself with the mods I mentioned here. The grave from the screenshot is also from another mod, see below.    ‎
